How to read a healthy menu: ingredients, portions and allergies

A dish name and photograph cannot tell you everything. Check ingredients, dressing, portions and allergy suitability before ordering.

How to read a healthy menu: ingredients, portions and allergies

Concept menu photograph.

Read the whole meal

Fish, rice, vegetables and dressing all belong to the same order. Compare the sides as well as the main ingredient. “Salad” and “rice bowl” do not establish a dish’s nutritional profile. Ask the kitchen when the photo and description leave something unclear.

Ask what one portion means

A photograph cannot establish portion weight, protein or calories. If you track nutrition, ask for figures tied to the actual recipe and serving. Eat Better does not publish figures for recipes that have not been confirmed.

Include sauces in the conversation

Ask what the dressing contains and whether it can be served separately. Removing a sauce is a request until the kitchen confirms it. Check soy sauce, fish sauce and sesame dressings rather than looking only at the main ingredient.

Distinguish allergies from preferences

The FDA stresses reading labels and avoiding known allergens; reactions can be serious. Explain the specific allergen and ask about cross-contact. FDA labelling rules refer to the United States and do not replace Vietnamese requirements. [1]

Understand a shared kitchen

Eat Better identifies its shared-kitchen setting in meal details. “No added X” is not a guarantee that no trace of X is present. Order only after the kitchen confirms suitability. A sample menu is not a substitute for individual advice when you need a therapeutic diet.

Keep the confirmed details

Save the dish, dressing preference and any agreed changes with your order reference. Contact the kitchen before eating if delivered information differs. Specific feedback on flavour, portion and packaging helps with future orders.
