What is TDEE? Use a calorie estimate as a starting point
Distinguish total daily energy expenditure from resting energy and workout calories, and learn what to check before using an estimate.

TDEE includes more than a workout
Total daily energy expenditure includes energy used at rest, processing food and physical activity. A gym session is only one component. NIH's energy-balance education describes these components. A running summary is therefore not the whole day's calories out. [1]
Why do calculators disagree?
Check age, height and weight units, and the description of the activity level. Tools may use different models or activity categories. Save the tool name, calculation date and assumptions. Comparing inputs is more useful than averaging several outputs without understanding how they were produced.
Is BMR the same as TDEE?
No. Basal metabolic rate describes baseline energy use under defined measurement conditions; TDEE also includes other expenditure. A BMR result is not an instruction for how much to eat or a weight-loss target. If a display merely says calories, find its explanation before using it to plan your day. [1]
Avoid counting exercise twice
If your selected activity category already includes regular workouts, adding the full workout estimate again may count the same activity twice. Check what the total covers and how an app handles wearable data. This is an input and interpretation issue, not a reason to invent a new formula.
An official tool to explore
NIDDK’s Body Weight Planner models adult eating and activity plans over time. It does not replace medical advice and excludes under-18s and pregnant or breastfeeding people. Seek professional advice for treatment-specific needs. [2]
Turn information into a practical plan
You can decide which lunches need delivery, which foods you enjoy and what portion details to request even without a calorie target. Eat Better's weekly meal-plan guide helps with this step. Compare personal needs with confirmed recipe information when available. A TDEE estimate cannot decide whether you will enjoy chicken or salmon.
